“Many of the parents we work with didn’t have stable access to education themselves,” Chris explains. “Whether it’s helping a child return to their familiar school or ensuring they can go to school at all, we’re giving them continuity, friendships, and the support they need to succeed—not just this year, but for the rest of their lives.”
In BEDS Plus’ Family Bridge program, Chris works with families who have at least one minor child, helping them move from shelter into temporary housing while ensuring the children have access to school – one of the many forms of assistance our case managers provide.
For the families in the BEDS Plus Family Bridge Program to have children in school isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
“School gives children stability, structure, and a chance to keep the friends and teachers they know—even when their home life is in transition. That’s why the McKinney-Vento Act is so important. It doesn’t give families the right to choose any school; it protects their right to stay connected to the school they already know—or, in some cases, to attend school for the first time in months,” shared Chris.
