At BEDS Plus, we often meet young adults who have spent months or years focused on immediate needs, including where they will sleep, where they will eat, and how they will make it through another day.
For many LGBTQ+ young adults, those challenges can be compounded by family rejection, discrimination, or a lack of support.
Through our Transition-Aged Youth programs, we work with young adults as they move beyond survival and begin focusing on employment, education, relationships, health, and future goals. Just as importantly, they have the opportunity to be seen, supported, and treated with dignity.
This Pride Month, we’re exploring why safe and affirming housing matters through the words of young adults in our programs.
China, a 24-year-old bisexual woman, came to BEDS Plus after spending time living in parks. Since connecting with our team, she says she has “gotten a lot more done for myself than I have in 6 years.” She recently moved into her own apartment through our transitional housing program and shared that “having my safe space feels amazing because I can think, feel, and move for myself by myself without judgment from anyone else.”
Danner, a 26-year-old gay man, came to BEDS Plus after experiencing homelessness. Since then, he says “things have been looking upward.” He has secured housing, employment at Home Depot, and reliable transportation to medical appointments. When asked what acceptance means to him, he shared:
“Feeling accepted means being allowed to drop your masks. It is the deep safety of knowing your quirks, flaws, and passions are recognized without judgment.”
Their experiences remind us that housing is about more than shelter. It creates room to focus on work, health, education, relationships, and future goals. It provides an opportunity to be yourself, build connections, and move beyond the daily realities of survival.
LGBTQ+ youth are significantly more likely to experience homelessness than their peers, often due to family rejection, abuse, discrimination, or a lack of support. Once homeless, many face additional barriers when seeking shelter and services, making it even harder to find safety and support.
At BEDS Plus, our Transition-Aged Youth programs provide transitional housing, intensive case management, and supportive service connections for young adults ages 18 to 24, including LGBTQ+ youth. Participants can then move into rapid rehousing and continue building independent lives.
