Meet Susan Valentine: Advocate, Neighbor, and Vice President of BEDS Plus Board

At BEDS Plus, we are fortunate to have leaders who not only serve but deeply care about our community. One such leader is Susan Valentine, our dedicated Vice President. Susan’s journey with BEDS Plus began close to home—literally. As a member of Emmanuel Episcopal in La Grange, she witnessed firsthand the impact of BEDS’ work when her church became a site for our day center and emergency overnight shelter.

Her involvement took a significant turn in 2015 during a pivotal moment for BEDS Plus. The Village of La Grange held public hearings on a proposed development of permanent supportive housing on Ogden Avenue, a project that faced unexpected opposition. Susan was astonished to see resistance from the community and felt compelled to stand up for what she believed in. “I wanted people to know about the good work BEDS undertook to help our less fortunate neighbors struggling with homelessness,” she reflects. She proudly declared herself a “YIMBY” (yes, in my backyard!) and has been an advocate ever since.

Since joining our Board in 2015, Susan has brought her 30+ years of experience as a litigation attorney in Chicago. She’s no stranger to conflict but what drives her is the opportunity to advocate for something she believes in so deeply.

“Before these individuals fell on tough times, they called this area home, just as we do. They aren’t strangers; they are our neighbors, and I feel privileged to be able to help them,” shared Susan.

Susan wants everyone to understand that BEDS Plus is so much more than an emergency shelter. “We are a leader in helping vulnerable people stabilize their lives through comprehensive housing and supportive services. Our success rate speaks volumes—"more than 80 percent of our clients transition into stable living situations, a testament to the effectiveness of our approach,” shared Susan.

Looking ahead, Susan is particularly passionate about our response to the challenges posed by COVID-19. She is deeply committed to our current project of transforming a roadside motel into a 55-room facility offering short-term, dignity-based emergency services. With nearly $9 million in government funds secured, Susan is determined to help raise the additional $1 million in private funds needed to bring this critical project to life. Susan Valentine is more than just a board member—she’s a neighbor, an advocate, and a passionate leader who believes that BEDS Plus makes our community stronger. We are proud to have her on our team.
