Stories of Courage and Resilience

Special thanks to Mike McNamara of Proper Rate for your dedication to bringing awareness and support to this issue.

This topic is personal for Mike McNamara, a La Grange resident and business owner.

“My sister was married to an abuser for 19 years and a local safe house program saved her life three different times as she fled on foot with two babies on her hips. I’m on a personal mission to raise awareness of domestic violence, the realities of this abuse in our very own neighborhoods, eliminate the stigma and shame associated with this and raise money to help women gain their independence back from their abusers.” A used car donated to Mike’s sister gave her the means to obtain a job and stability for her family.

Road to Independence Event is back raising Funds and Awareness for Domestic Violence Survivors

BEDS Plus is happy to announce a return partnership with Mike McNamara of Proper Rate and Milk Money Brewing for the 4th Annual Road To Independence Event on April 25th, 6:30pm at Milk Money Brewing. Raising awareness and funds for BEDS Plus to assist survivors of domestic violence with housing and supportive services.

This event presented by Mike McNamara of Proper Rate and co-hosted by Milk Money Brewing, will have live entertainment provided by Blue Lexi unplugged and Mike Hines of Whiskey Jezebel benefitting the Domestic Violence clients of BEDS Plus Care. Returning this year are the Ladies of Harley, the Illinois Route 66 Hog Chapter and Illinois Harley Davidson of Countryside will be supporting the popular Harley Davidson Photo booth.

BEDS Plus helps individuals stabilize their lives through housing and supportive services.

This topic is personal for Mike McNamara, La Grange resident and local mortgage lender Proper Rate, who is spearheading this event. Mike is passionate about this cause because it has affected someone in his family.

This year, the event will have a Route 66 theme to illustrate transportation needs of individuals that are survivors of domestic violence. One of the largest costs outside of housing that can impede progress for a survivor can be access to transportation.  Javon Harris, Director of Housing at BEDS Plus shares, “Our clients are rebuilding and can't afford gas to locate a job or apartment, car repairs, bus passes and Ubers to doctors and therapists. Not having access stalls a survivor’s ability to maintain and gain employment and is a leading expense for our agency.”

Abusers often create an environment of dependence, financially isolating individuals. This is one of the many reasons why women stay with their abusers. Miriam Martinez, BEDS DV Housing Development Manager, added, “BEDS Plus sees too many women who find themselves homeless when they decide to leave their abuser. We partner with domestic violence agencies and are a direct resource providing assistance for survivors. Your contributions will directly assist women and families with stability through supportive services and housing.  It is very common for BEDS domestic violence clients to have little or no credit and housing is a crucial step to security and transformation.”

Tickets are available prior to the event a: https://beds-plus.org/road-to-independence-fundraiser/ $25 entry fee ($30 at the door).  Ten percent of sales from Milk Money’s Exclusive Event Beer – Road To Independence Ale - will be revealed and 10 percent of totals sales from The April 25th event, along with sponsors, will assist these vulnerable members in our community. Sponsors of this event include lead sponsor Proper Title, Mike McNamara - Proper Rate, Phillip Wagler - American Family Insurance Agency, @properties/ Christie’s International Real Estate, Ladies of Harley & the Illinois Route 66 Hog Chapter.

Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness among women. Last year, we served 420 people who survived or are fleeing domestic violence. Abusers cut off women’s access to employment, money, and other assets, familial and social networks, housing, and other resources. Domestic violence shelters often have residency limits, after which women may not have places to go. We offer dedicated, trauma-informed Domestic Violence Bridge and Transitional Housing programs and can refer them to healthcare, behavioral healthcare, and human service providers, including domestic violence specialists. We finally help them secure new, safe homes for themselves and their children.

Along with our partners who provide domestic violence shelter and counseling, we play an important role in the system of care as a housing provider with designated resources for this population. We recognize the courage and resilience of these survivors during Women's History Month and the many local programs and support workers. If you are struggling in a situation or know someone struggling, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.
