Sheila never gave up. Despite obstacles that could have broken her spirit, she remained focused on one goal—building a stable home where she and her two sons could be together.
Sheila worked tirelessly – balancing a full-time job while navigating the requirements of the DCFS system. But without stable housing, reuniting with her children always felt just out of reach.
That changed when she connected with Erica, a BEDS Plus case manager and housing navigator, who witnessed Sheila’s determination firsthand. “She was proactive, self-motivated, and never let setbacks slow her down. Her biggest goal was getting her kids back, and she never lost sight of that,” Erica shared.
“Logically, we needed a home to be together, but emotionally, it meant everything,” Sheila said. “Family time, school, even just sitting down for a meal—it all feels real now.”
Her boys struggled with anger—a response to their father’s absence and incarceration, a pain they didn’t know how to process. But Sheila refused to let their struggles define them. She worked through the challenges, took parenting classes and connected with other resources through BEDS and DCFS to rebuild their lives.
With BEDS’ support, Sheila secured an apartment, each step bringing her closer to her boys. Now, they are living together full-time, creating new memories. Her perseverance has paid off.
