Suburban Cook County communities face dangerously cold temperatures over the next few days – with wind chills projected as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit. People experiencing homelessness who live outdoors risk frostbite, hypothermia, respiratory illnesses, and death. BEDS Plus, Inc. operates an Emergency Walk-In program at its Summit Service Center (7666 W. 63rd Street, Summit, IL 60501) from 12-4 on Monday – Saturday. If you encounter people experiencing homelessness, please direct them to us. Folks in need of assistance can walk in, no appointment needed, and talk with a case manager and get connected or referred to services. They can also get out of the elements and receive food and basic necessities including warm clothing. Those in need of help can also call our crisis line at 708-354-0858, which is staffed 24/7, or email us at shelter@beds-plus.org. As always, in case of emergencies, dial 9-1-1. In addition, here is a link to warming centers in Cook County. 2241 S Halsted is a new city resource that has a 200-bed shelter attached to it. It also acts as a 24/7 warming center for anyone from the city looking for resources.
