Women’s History Month at BEDS Plus

During Women’s History Month, BEDS honors trailblazers in housing and human services while celebrating the resilience of women overcoming homelessness. We also recognize the strength of domestic violence survivors reclaiming safety, stability, and independence, culminating in our Road to Independence event on May 1st.

The Reality Behind the Numbers

Domestic violence remains a crisis. Calls for help in Illinois have surged 90% since the pandemic, and in 2024, the Chicago suburbs went 107 days without available domestic violence shelter beds. Survivors often flee with nothing, face overwhelming barriers, and struggle to find safe, stable housing.

But behind these statistics are women who have overcome unimaginable obstacles, proving that resilience and support can change lives.

How BEDS Plus Helps

BEDS Plus works alongside emergency shelters like Constance Morris House, Crisis Center for South Suburbia, and Sarah’s Inn to ensure women have a safe place to go. Other times, survivors come directly to us—seeking help through our Summit Service Center Emergency Services Walk-In Program, call center, website or community partners.

We provide shelter and trauma-informed case management, helping survivors navigate housing, access resources, and rebuild their lives.
